The Journey of Motherhood & the Value of In-Home Newborn Photos

The past few weeks has created the most unique experience for me, as a mother of two young children. This month consisted solely of newborn family sessions and high school senior sessions. This juxtaposition of the beginning of motherhood and the ending of the childhood era and entering into adulthood…it has made me so keenly aware of how quickly our children grow. How quickly time flies from the day we bring our baby home from the hospital to the day they’re graduating high school and moving out of our home! My oldest child is 4 years old and my heart just cannot fathom the end of raising my little boy.

This role of family photographer has been such a blessing in my life, and raising my own children, as it reminds me to be ever present and cherishing each stage because they all do come to an end. For the parents who are experienced enough to have a large age gap between their children, I imagine they feel this tug on their heart every day. The heartache of watching your older children grow, knowing they once were so tiny that they barely fit into Newborn diapers. It truly is a blessing to have this mindset with your eyes wide open to the coming future. This isn’t meant to be a depressing post, but simply a reminder to live in the present with your children, whatever stage they are currently in. Of course every stage has its challenges, but all phases come to an end, meaning those challenges will as well. For myself, the newborn stage was the hardest with both of my children. Having the opportunity to photograph so many newborns being welcomed into their home has allowed me to look back on my own children’s newborn phases with fonder memories of the joy that existed in the trying times.

All of this is to say, capturing these moments eternally with photographs will never be time, energy or money wasted. In these times, we, as parents, take 100s of photos of our children on our phones…daily! However, do we ever print these photos? Do they end up in photo albums or scrapbooks? Unlikely. I don’t know anyone who does scrapbook or place photos into albums other than my mom. What that translates to is thousands and thousands of images that we rarely see and are even less likely to see 10 years from now. There’s nothing wrong with that; it’s simply the times we are in. But that creates the need to make the investment into professional photography sessions for the important moments in our lives, especially with photographers who provide tangible art to add into your home. I provide digital images, as well as access to ordering wall art, matted prints and professionally crafted photo albums that will last for generations. When we, as parents, are aging or no longer present with our children, our children will cherish these tangible art pieces so deeply.
